Executive Summary
Echelon delivered an end to end solution leveraging SAP ECC (Material Management (MM), Quality Management (QM), Plant Maintenance (PM), Sales & Distribution (SD), Financial Accounting & Controlling (FICO)), .Net integration, Mobile Handheld UBS and other existing solutions in the landscape to address the company’s need for automated Failed Material and Industry Reporting, Warranty Management and Inventory Management.

About the Company
North America’s leading provider of railcars and freight car – nearly 220,000 strong – and rail management services to a wide variety of industries. As part of its business, the company has established railcar maintenance work shops to perform regular maintenance and refurbish the rail cars as per AAR requirements. As part of its fleet maintenance, the company replaces worn out parts, defective parts and failed parts as and when required; in which some parts are covered under warranty.

The Problem
The railcar supplier has over 50 company owned repair facilities and works with a multitude of refurbishing facilities and independent repair shops. The company needed a partner to deliver a comprehensive solution to address its internal and external Failed Material Reporting, Warranty Management, Inventory Management and Industry Reporting.
One of the main challenges the company faced with its legacy system was the repeated purchase of parts already in stock due to the difficulty for the maintenance team to find the part’s warranty details out in the field. Also, in order to meet industry guidelines, increase successful warranty claims and reduce overall process inefficiencies, the company needed to implement a comprehensive Failed Material Reporting application.

The Solution
Echelon delivered an end to end solution leveraging SAP ECC – Material Management (MM), Quality Management (QM), Plant Maintenance (PM), Sales & Distribution (SD), Financial Accounting & Controlling (FICO), .Net integration, Mobile Handheld UBS and other existing solutions in the landscape.
Echelon was able to deliver this complex engagement within time and budget without any over-runs in six pilot facilities and over 30,000 articulated railcars automating the following processes:
• Warranty/defective analysis and claims
• Electronic transmission of data to AAR for reporting and metrics purposes
• Status and information updates among various business partners at the FMO, IRF, LDC, Supplier, company SCM, and corporate locations
• Data self-service for queries and analytics
• Warranty data real-time updates

Outcome
Echelon’s implementation of the FMR application caused volumes to increase, but manual interactions for data entry to decrease significantly. The technology implementation increased the rail supplier’s revenue by reducing the redundant purchase of parts in stock and reduced the company’s overall inefficiency.
